Preview: report guides towns, cities onward from extractive resource dependency.
In most places where people labor with natural resources—logging, drilling, mining, or farming—hard work and sacrifice is a way of life. Yet communities based on these industries are financially, in the long run, some of the poorest in the nation.
A new report from Strong Towns, a nationally recognized thought leader dedicated to helping people make their communities financially resilient and prosperous, aims to change that.
Through Friday, May 28, Strong Towns will preview the report in a series of daily articles on its media webpage.
The full report, "Breaking Out of the Resource Trap: An Economic Plan for Resource-Based Communities," will be available June 9.
People want to know that their community has a future—that their children would be able to build good lives there if they choose. This report by Strong Towns provides a proven strategy for creating that future.
Charles Marohn, Founder and President of Strong Towns
The report features examples from real-life communities that are moving forward from natural resource dependence in Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, and more. It includes straightforward strategies for building resilience using local tools, and a wealth of practical resources for local leaders who are ready to get started.
Strong Towns is a national movement that helps local leaders identify the cause of decline in our cities and take action to build a stronger, financially resilient future. Strong Towns is reshaping the conversation about development in North America with its advocacy for bottom-up, incremental action.
